Hi All,
Just a short note about the reenactment. First off, the Shenandoah valley is really beautiful! We arrived Fri. and set up camp. Saturday morning was dress parade and some marching drills. It was hot and humid. We went to the museum and looked around before the battle. The battle didn't go so well for the yanks as we were outnumbered and out maneuvered. Jim G. and I were were separated from the unit and were "captured" by rebel Calvary.
Sat. night we had a pig roast. Excellent! We had torrential downpours with a thunderstorm that evening so we spent most of that night in our tent.
Sunday was cloudy and cool but no rain. I went to the church service and after that Dillon and Nick played some music in camp. They had people dancing in the company street! That was a hoot! Sunday's battle had the Confederates repelling our charge and running us off the field with the help of the cadets from V. M. I., just as they did in the original battle in 1864. The VMI cadets come to New Market every year to participate in the reenactment. Ten cadets were killed in the battle and they have a ceremony and a roll call every anniversary of the battle. During the roll call, when the dead boy's names are called, someone responds, "Killed on the field of honor, Sir." Neat.
